The art of surfing was first documented in Polynesia aboard James Cook's HMS Endeavour during it's first voyage while staying in Tahiti in 1769, but surfing history goes back further in Peru and may have even began as early as humans started swimming with body surfing, the oldest style of catching a wave.
Surfing has been important part of ancient Polynesian culture long before European contact. The Ali'i were traditionally the most skilled "surfers" with the best surfboards made out of koa.
Hawaiians called surfing He'e Nalu which means wave sliding and before entering the mysterious ocean they would pray to the gods for protection and strength. It was not until Waikiki became a popular tourist destination that surfing made a resurgence in popularity, even Mark Twain tried surfing.
Hawaii hosts many professional surfing competitions during the winter and the most famous one of all is the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational.

SURF CLASS - Surfing is fun in Maui's warm water! We offer all levels of surfing instruction. Our surf school is located on the island's most reliable surf spot. This activity can be enjoyed by the whole family. From young kids to old-timers, beginner lessons to advanced, Lessons can be a one-day activity, a camp, private coaching or longer programs are available too. The Maui waves are great for beginners and advanced surfers too.

Group Surf Lesson
Duration: 2 Hours • Max of 6 students per instructor • Ages 12+
Learn the skills needed to surf during this small-group lesson in Lahaina. Surfing is an important part of Hawaiian culture and your instructor provides a safe, and fun, environment for people of all ages to learn this water sport. Paddle out to the Breakwall in Lahaina and get a feel for the waves before popping up on your surfboard. This lesson is suitable for beginners and intermediate surfers.
This lesson joins you with other surfers. There is a maximum of 6 students per instructor. If you look forward to surfing with other beginners and love to meet new people, this is the lesson for you!
We specialize in all levels from beginning to advanced. The classes include:

Surfing is a great way to get in touch with the ocean. Our experienced instructors will give you their personal attention and share the surfing experience with you. Learning to surf could be the beginning of your new lifelong passion. We offer a range of classes for individuals and the whole family.

Surf lessons are the easiest and safest way to learn how to surf. Our professional surf instructors undergo annual training and certifications to make sure they deliver the best and safest surf lessons possible. We are located in Kona, Hawaii and ready to teach you how to surf. Whether you are a seasoned vet or never stepped foot on a surfboard before, our flexible surf lesson programs are designed to cater to your every need.

A one on one instruction for the max amount of surf time. Great for all levels of surfers including people of all ages and older and experienced surfers looking for a private guide. Tandem lessons for children 7 years of age and younger are also available at the same price. For safety purposes tandem lessons are mandatory for small children. The child shares a board with his or her instructor to catch the most amount of waves!
Minimum 2 people to start a group. Single individuals may be added to existing groups. This is a mixed group situation with about 1 instructor to every 3 or 4 students. Students should be at least 10 years of age.
Minimum 2 people. This is not a mixed group with other students added to you, this is your own private group! Great for families or friends traveling together wanting more surf time without being rotated in a group setting.

Our Semi-Private lessons are great for couples, friends/family, or kids. Allows more attention with your instructor. 2-3 students max
Our group lessons offer that perfect mix of individual attention in a team environment! Four students per instructor.
We suggest a private for those who want a more advanced lesson or complete individualized attention. We also recommend a private lesson for surfers who want to work on their skills or for those who are hesitant beginners! We definitely recommend our Private Lesson for young children for a 1 on 1 focus
Family Private Surfing Lessons – An exclusive 2 hour private lesson with a minimum of 3 students with members of your family or party only. 99.9% of our students stand up on their first lesson. Student to instructor ratio is a minimum of 3-1 Children under 8 are welcome.
Private and semi private surf lessons are 1 or 2 hours with a maximum of 2 students with 1 dedicated instructor. Great for friends or couples.
Semi-Private students are partnered with other students in small groups.

The North Shore Surf Girls is owned and run by real North Shore Surfer Girls. We are former pro surfers, trained lifeguards and have been featured in Blue Crush, Bay Watch, Fuel TV, MTV, Travel Channel and more. We are a local company and treat our customers like family. We love teaching surfing! Our goal is to get you to love surfing as much as we do.
You will watch the sunset over the ocean while dining with your private party. You can choose between either a surfing lesson or our paddle board turtle tour with takes you up a gentle river.
We start with a two hour surf lesson, and end with turtle viewing and famous Hawaiian shave ice! You will share the exclusive experience with members of your group only. Student to instructor ratio is a minimum of 3-1 Children under 8 are welcome.

Our instructors are dedicated to your success. Our lessons are taught by CPR, First-aide, lifeguard trained instructors. We've taught thousands of people how to surf.
Our lessons always start with an educational talk story and hands on demonstration so everybody understands safe surfing. We teach ocean and water safety as part of all of our programs.
